What to do when your loved one insists someone’s been stealing from them:

1. Don’t argue: Your loved one’s complaint seems real to them.

2. Divert attention: Tell your loved one you will help them look for the misplaced item but “find” something else (like an old photo or cassette) distract them along the way.

3. Allay their fears: Tell them whatever’s necessary. If they think a bracelet was stolen, for example, tell them, “I’ve just taken it to be cleaned.”
